I had an incident in one of my classes last week, and I've been stewing about it (because that is what I do. I don't let it go, I turn it inward and stew and it either comes out like vomit at the wrong time or it sits there like a big wad of swallowed bubble gum.)

I was teaching one of my classes which, natch, is all women. At the end of the class, I asked people to put their loaned tassle belts back into the bag I carry them in. One student took hers off, and as she was putting the belt in the bag said to me "You have a good night now, hear?" as she slapped my butt. And her hand was there just a bit too long for my comfort.

I was kinda shocked. The other students present registered some shock as well.

My reaction was to turn and say politely but loudly "if I were a male student with a female teacher, THAT kind of behaviour would NOT be tolerated. Please don't violate my personal space again!"

She flushed red with embarrassment and I immediately felt really bad. All of a sudden I thought I had maybe made a bigger issue out of nothing. It wasn't like she jumped me and ripped all my clothes off. But at the same time, she made me uncomfortable.

So...

This week I taught again. She was in class and smiling. We do a warm-up at the beginning of class where we lift our chest. I was counting it when I looked in the mirror and this same woman was grabbing her boobs and lifting them with her hands (as opposed to using her muscles to lift them).

My mouth fell open and I gasped loudly, but before I could say anything one of the other students called her on it.

"WHAT are you doing? You don't use your hands to lift them, you are supposed to be using your back muscles. THAT just looks rude!!"

Girlfriend flushed red again. "I just wanted to see if they would go any higher, because he can lift his chest really high. I didn't think anyone could see me."

Other student: "We're in a studio surrounded by mirrors and you're in front... we can ALL see you!"

This time Girlfriend apologized for disrupting the class and promised not to do so again. At the end of class, she came up to me and I sort of cringed because I was now afraid of what she was going to say.

"I just wanted to say, I really enjoy this class. It makes me feel great and I love this style."

All I did was smile, but I am worried that I should apologize for humiliating her in class.

Am I wrong here?

Valizan interviews Turkish Dancer Özgen on The Gilded Serpent

Gilded Serpent editrix Lynette Harris has uploaded video of me interviewing male Turkish dancer Özgen Ozgec at the International Bellydance Conference of Canada.

During his appearance on the Main Stage, Özgen danced with a rope that he twirled around his body while he was dancing. It was fascinating to watch, and he was damn good with it. I was backstage (I had just danced with The Righteous Rogues Of Raks) questioning him about the rope when Lynette happened along and asked to tape the conversation:

Mens costuming

My boyfriend has recently started to attend my belly dance classes, but is having problems finding mens belly dance costumes.

Whenever he has looked on the net, either pirates come up or what he calls poofy costumes?
Is there a smart line of belly dance clothes out there, that allows men to feel the part without feeling silly?

Something for the birthday boy

Hello all!

I have a beautiful soon-to-be, four year-old, God son, who loves to dance. You put on anything with a beat on and he's moving! And lately I've caught him imitating my hip movements and even giving me a little shoulder shimmy. I LOVE IT. Luckily, his pops is cool with all of this and have even allowed me to sew a little hip sash for him. I'd love to buy a bellydance video featuring one of our wonderful male dancers, but I haven't seen any around. Any suggestions out there?

The event would include:
- Showcase of Men dancing Middle Eastern dance styles

Male Ballet dancer does a kick-ass article for Newsweek on male dancers -- the struggles we endure, and the stereotyping we face:

Obviously tuned to Ballet, but his opinions most certainly hit home for me. The money quote:

The most irritating aspect of the male-dancer stereotype is the underlying insinuation that we in some way lack strength of character or a courageous spirit. Male and female, all dancers undergo strenuous training from a very young age, and constantly wrestle with injuries and fatigue. But male dancers must possess a special type of will and fortitude if they are to become professionals, for, like fish swimming upstream, we have to fight through the current of thinly veiled contempt that much of society harbors for our chosen path. In our culture, girls are encouraged to take ballet; boys receive no such endorsement, except of course from ballet teachers or exceptionally supportive parents. The boy who perseveres in dance must have a genuine hunger for it, must be uniquely motivated and dedicated, and must develop a truly thick skin.

I was talking with my boyfriend last night after he finished teaching. He was really irritated with a certain student who has just opened a cooking school (stay with me, it gets more relevant) who was excited that:

'Some men are going to be allowed into class. You know before, we never let men in class. Probably, they are more interested in women than cooking. What if they are stalkers?!! It's dangerous!"

...I'm sure you can follow where this is going. I looked and I couldn't find this topic addressed. I was wondering for you male teachers, do you allow men in your class? Do you interview them at all before class?

I used to teach at a school that had a 'taste of BD' workshop every month for free. Without fail, men would write every month that they wanted to come and watch. The director of the school would write that they would be welcome to come to a regular class and all of them never responded.

There is one male in our community now, he comes to lots of dance events, but he has been thrown out of every school in Tokyo because all he does is hit on girls during classes. I should add most studios have communal changing areas-if they have changing areas at all. The one man I have taken a class with changed with all of us in the same room-and at first a few girls did quit-but then everyone got with the program.

I'm just curious if you can weed these bad apples out ahead of time? Or how you would do so?

But at the same time I can't imagine turning away anyone from dance myself.

Large Men in Belly Dance

I just wanted to know what does the Male Belly Dancer community feel about heavy-set Belly Dancers. My name is Xavier, male belly dancer, and I have been studying belly dancing for three years now... I dance with a troup and with the studio wherei take classes on Tribal Fusion. I am not that much of an amature but I am a little above average for your typical male dancer. i am now perfroming , have been for about a year now. Many people have loved me and many have had no intrest, but my question is does it seem unattractive to be a large belly dancer. I kind of have a little conflict within myself about it all, but bellydance is something that i love and hold true to my heart. I myself do think I am a decent dancer, especially for someone my size (240lb). But i do look great at least and I try real hard.. But maybe i can't live up to other dancers I have seen and met including Rachel Brice and Zoe Jakes . At least i can try, or should i even bother? I don't know. Obstacles to men in dance?

I am currently writing an article on attitudes and obstacles men face in Belly dance and I am looking for some input.

I am familiar with some of the common myths & attitudes circulating (belly dance was only danced by women, originates in birthing rituals, expresses the goddess, men are too aggressive and warlike to do this 'feminine' dance form, male dancers are inherently effeminate, women can not learn from male teachers because they lack the feminine essence of dance, etc.)

But I would like to know from you all who know better than I- what are some of the obstacles you face in becoming a Belly Dancer as a male, what are the attitudes you face from the dance community and from the public, the current atmosphere if you will.
I am looking for the good as well as the bad, so feel free to share positive experiences too, and let me know what keeps you going when you do get those bad attitudes thrown in your face.

Starts at (approximately) 7pm and ends at (approximately) 9pm. Please bring your own CD or cued-up audio cassette tape. Between five and seven minutes is ideal. No swords or fire. Snakes are okay. I am thinking of subscribing to a magazine for bellydance, but I don't want one that never addresses the existence of male dancers. I don't demand that every article uses "(s)he" and "him or her" etc. but one that occasionally publishes articles written by/for men.

OK, so in my quest to have more props than I have time to perform with, I went to a speciality store and looked at shishas. the one I liked was green glass with silver metals. what concerns me is the fact that the base was flat and had about a 4 inch diameter. watching the video of Tarik I am pretty sure his headwear supports the shisha so this is not a problem. Anyone have any knowledge in this area?

Dancer Name?

Hello,

I have been taking lessons for about 6 months now and am going to be doing my first public performance in about a month, the question I have is whether or not I should take on dancer/performance name?

Many of the dancers I have seen so far do have dancer names but then you have others who don't, I suppose it is a personal choice but I would appreciate any opinions.

Also, is there any convention for what names are appropriate?

I have been considering the name Sirhan which means wolf in Muslim, when I did a google it hit on Sirhan Sirhan who assassinated Sen. Robert Kennedy. Before I had googled it I liked the name and still do somewhat but have concern about how my fellow Americans might take it.

Ok, so any thoughts opinions would be appreciated.

An etiquette question about video

Here is a thought I was pondering and would love to get some input back.

Let us say you are a dance troupe/performer of some sort. However, you are not so huge that you command a fee when you get invited to dance at gigs. You dance and the host videotapes the show.

Is it good form on the part of the host to offer a copy of the performance tape free since they aren't paying the performers to come dance? Or more to the point, is it tacky or in bad form to charge anything other than the price of a DVD disc to get a copy?

My thought was that if I pay my gas to get to your gig, put on make-up, and then perform for no pay, and you are charging people to come in to your show, the least you could do is give me a free DVD of the performance. Giving me an order form to order a copy at $20 seems wrong somehow.

Or am I wrong?

Searching for pictures of male dancers

Hi ya'all, I know you have seen me post before about NTMEDA www.ntmeda.org and our magazine Papyrus.
Well, I am searching for pictures of male dancers to put in our new edition on Men in Bellydance. I have 3 great articles (by male dancers) so far and I need pics to go with them. Of course the author is supplying pics of their own, but I would like to include other great performance or studio shots.

Please send your contribution to s_kayton@yahoo.com - pics should be at least 300 dpi.

The magazine reaches over 300 dancers in the North Texas area and beyond (Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, etc).
I would be able to send copies of the edition to any dancer whose pics are used in the edition.

My deadline is Friday.

Also - if anyone is insterested in writing for us in the furture please contact me. I am always looking for new articles related to all areas of the dance we all love. My theme for the next issue is workshops - how to choose, how to prepare, what to expect, how to get the most out the workshop...etc. I aslo include articles not related to the theme but timely in the dance community.

Jim Boz 's Milwaukee Workshops and Show - 12 Days Away!

Hello everybody, I'm Dave, and I just found this tribe.
I'm a drummer (pretty good) and also a self-costumer (not so good).
Here's my question, cross-posted from another tribe:

Does anyone know where I can get an embroidered or solid (not knit) kufi that is in a large size? My head is around 24 inches, and all the places I have tried only have them in a teeny-tiny size.
Some days I don't have the time or energy to mess with my turban, and I don't like to go bare-haired!

First off, I want to apologize to this tribe...
thought I had posted info about my naming contest here - but see now that I did not.

Entries for week two of the naming contest have been posted.
Check my blog to see 'em all. So many possibilities…
Going to be hard for the judges to pick just one.

As far as the studio goes – I’m still looking at spaces, and have several to drive by and check out today. But unless one of them really jumps out – think I may have settled on one in particular. A tad smaller than would like (wanted something that would still fit the bill as the studio grows), but the cost per sq. ft is a is key factor in any start-up, and I’d rather put my dollars to work advertising and developing the studio than on paying for bigger space.
It’s not just paying for the space – but insurance and other expenses (liability insurance is tied to the location, size, and type of biz). I can find larger accommodations nearby at later date if necessary (when class size require and finances are fatter).

I’m also still looking for a partner if anyone out there is interested…
Someone willing to put in time/effort as well as financial contribution.
Co-ownership is much easier on each partner than going it alone.

Need help with a theme issue for a magazine - the men of Bellydance

My name is Yeli and I am a dancer in Dallas Texas. I am the editor of our local MEDA magazine/newsletter called Papyrus. www.ntmeda.org
I would like to do a feature issue on the Brotherhood of Bellydance. I am searching for authors, articles and pictures to use in this edtion. I would rather come to "the source" for the information, than try to have our current writers express this theme.

If you are interested in writing a short article about a topic related to men in bellydance, I would love to talk to you. My theme for this edition is very broad and I am interested in hearing your ideas for articles. I usually write at least one article per issue but I need your assistance here.

Authors who are published in the Papyrus will have a picture or two printed with them along with a short into/ by-line that can include your website and personal info. I will also be sure to send copies of the edition to you. Our magazine currently reaches 300+ members in North Texas and beyond.

If you are only interested in sharing your photos for the issue, please send me a private message. I can only accept high res pics of 300 dpi or better. I will need pics for the front cover, to put with articles, etc.

Male and Female students? Same or Different?

i got word recently that i will have two new male students comming to take my beginners class with the Hope of becoming Professional.

In preparing for this i have questioned How differently should i treat the two students movements... obviously i will give males different arm and hand movements to go along with the steps that i plan to teach.
Is there any other tips that can be suggested?, after all its their choice to dance effeminate, but i dont want to be the reason why they are dancing effeminate if they dont want to dance in that way... Especially if they plan on Going Professional!

Belly Dancing Fire Fan Workshop with Steven:

In this workshop we will cover fire safety and costume strategies, basic movement, fan handling techniques, as well as original fire fan dance combinations that can be incorporated into any choreography or improve situation.

Steven Eggers has over 6 years of Belly-dancing experience. When he moved to San Diego in 2005, he joined the prestigious Atash Maya Dance Company where he performs and teaches their own unique style of Tribal Fusion and American Tribal Style Belly Dancing.

Please bring a set of fire fans with you to class. Silk fans may be substituted, and those variations will be covered if needed. Fire Fans will be available for purchase by “Fire by Trick Concepts” at Abundant Sugar before and after the workshop.

In my three point five years of dancing in Pittsburgh, I've finally hit a first: someone who is against male dancers. And she is an import from somewhere else.

She is the author of this http://www.farashadance.com/Baladi.html article. Normally, I would just say live and let live, but she is starting a Meetup.com group and event here in the city and trying to be an influence. How do I respond to someone like this?

I'm signed up for her Meetup event. I know that if I get turned away at the door a few of the other dancers here would walk out with me. But I would rather show her that all men aren't like the lecherous frat boys she met in college.

Ideally I would take some printouts of Asim's web pages along with videos of Tito and Jim Boz. What would you recommend?

This time we will feature workshops with some of the top International Middle Eastern Dance instructors! Workshops open to all genders, it is not a *male* specific event except that we are offering workshops from male instructors and the performance showcase will feature an all male cast of performers.

ATS 101 in M'waukee with Valizan

Under the gracious hosting of Madame Shaia Fahrid, I will be giving a workshop in basic ATS (American Tribal Style) bellydance in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 1st and 2nd, 2007.

In the evening of Friday June 1st I'll be doing a basic class in Tahtiib, which is an Egyptian Martial Stick Dance. If you wondered where the cute assaya dance that women do came from, this would be the men's version. Women are welcome to come for the fun.

Saturday I will start with Tribal 101 where I will teach American Tribal Style from the ground up for those who are curious. ATS is about group improvisation, so you'll learn how to play with your friends, and make it up as you go along.

Saturday afternoon I'll do stuff that is harder, but still fun. (it is ME after all... if it ain't fun, I ain't doing it!!)

Saturday night, I'll be headlining a show with some of the wonderful dance artists of the region. I can't wait!

What woud you get?

My girlfriend is going to Turkey for 4 weeks on a Rotary travel scholarship. She has asked if there is anything I want her to bring back for me, dance related. The major limits she will have is carrying capacity. Whatever it is, it has to fit inside her suitcase with the rest of her month long belongings.

With that in mind, what could she find for a male dancer that would be very difficult to find in the states? My style is more Tribal but I'm open to anything.

Where are all the guys? (mild xpost)

So why don't more men dance? I think it boils down, sadly, to a guy vs girl thing. Guys, as a rule, present company excepted of course, don't want to put themselves out there - be it fear ("lookit the eejit up there"), laziness (as I've been) or their interests being in other areas. From my side of the gender fence, in this society, it seems women have a greater freedom to express themselves, especially in dance.

To me, the idea of being in a troupe rather than soloing helps put the 'fear/exposure' concern to rest. There's strength - and relative safety - in numbers.

And about the "lack of coordination" concern I hear? I wouldn't presume to do some of the things my dear friend Bhrigha can (she of the butterfly belly), but I haven't seen anything in the PURE foundation choreography that's a showstopper. Time and effort should do the trick.

High Honour For Asim

For those of you who are aware of the SCA, that high fount of knowledge that we call Woody or Asim was acknowledged into the Order Of The Laurel for his research this past weekend at Atlantian Coronation.

He was probably very surprized to see so many of his friends from faraway places present for the ceremony. I flew down from Canada, Mistress Lakshmi was present as were Mistress Violante and her husband Miguel, and others.

Please help me congratulate Asim on this grand acknowledgement.
