We actually have enough guys in my classes to do a group piece in next year's spring recital- kind of following the model of some of the other mainstream dance companies in town- They will all be performing with their classes as well, but thought it would be fun to do a just guys number.
Sooo I am wondering if any of you have music suggestions that might be particularly appropriate, or fun for a group of 5 guys, ages 9 to (oops, we won't go there!)- all will have had min. 2 years of classes, so I'm ready to break out & have some fun with this group!

SHERRI WHEATLEY - TRIBAL FUSION FUNDAMENTALS:
This workshop focuses on the fundamentals of Tribal Fusion Bellydance ranging from its ATS to the evolution of this style including more experimental fusion stylizations. Some previous Tribal Fusion experience is helpful, but not required. Open to all levels.

SADIE - SAMBA BELLYDANCE FUSION:
Brazilian Samba is one of Sadie and Kaya's most requested classes and workshops. This workshop will break down some of the most popular moves and foot patterns in the Samba no Pe.., the soloist dance seen at Rio's Carnaval and in many night clubs in Brazil, as well many of th traditional Afro-Brazilian movements and add them together in exciting choreography or short combinations. Get ready to have a great time, burn some serious calories and add some spice to your dance vocabulary. Open to all levels.

FRANK FARINARO - TRULA/BELLYNESIAN:
In this workshop we focus on elements of Tribal and Cabaret Bellydance as well as the Polynesian dances of Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa. Both of these dances hold strong similarities in movement vocabulary. As we progress, we focus on fusing the different styles together to show how they complement each other.

Teaching a guy who wants to learn belly dance.

I am so excited! After teaching belly dance to women for 4 years now, I have a guy that wants to join my class. I really would love to teach him, but I have never taught men before. I have seen many male dancers perform and I have taken workshops by Jim Boz, but never seen how a man would be instructed. Are there any conciderations I need to be aware of? Or can I teach him the same basic structure of movements that I teach the women and let him discover his own style within that? I want to do this well and teach him right, so any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

TRAVEL
*Expedia is one of the best ways to find a flight to Denver via DIA (Denver International Airport), our main airport. Frontier and United are our city airlines and have many direct affordable flights.

*Denver is a big city so unless you book a hotel very near the studio and shows, you may end up paying more than expected for taxis. The best option is probably a rental car which you can pick up at the airport. Public transit is another option. You can look them up at RTD.

* For hotel or lodging, type in the zip code 80203 into your hotel search to find the hotel availability nearest the dance studio and show location. The studio is located just a few blocks from Downtown Denver.

*If you are interested in sharing a room or rental car with another dancer, please let us know and we will try to put you in contact with other interested dancers.

* Denver is a fun city. Be sure to google search some of the activities you can do while visiting like our museum, mountains, 6 Flags Elitch Gardens, etc.

Elijah teaching @ Elevation 2009, April 17-19 in Denver w/Tribe Marrakech!

We are excited to welcome the "fabulous" Elijah to the Denver area for Elevation 2009, on April 17-19.

Elevation 2009 is the 5th year of our yearly belly dance festival. It is held in the small Western town of Golden, CO, nestled down into a valley and up against the Rocky Mountains, near Denver.

The event venue is across the street from our store/studio Paprika, where some of the smaller classes will be held.
There are also hotels in the next block.

A beautiful river runs through the heart of town, and the largest brewery in the world offers free beer just 2 blocks away! DID you hear that? FREE BEER!

There will be 3 full days of classes, 2 excellent shows with pro sound, lights, DJ, and VJ.
The Fri night show is catered with a "marvelous" Middle Eastern buffet, and there will be attendee performances, and the Sat night show is for the teachers and a few special guests.

We hold our shows in a large club, and this really is one of the most FUN events around. It's not an event where everyone is made to sit quietly in a theater and suffer through long and drawn out shows. We have fun and dance and laugh and cut up and have a few dranky-dranks. We've got an "superb" DJ of Indian decent from the Island of Trinidad that keeps us all jumping to his Chutney Soca and Bangin Bhangra rhythms.

This year is more family friendly with Kids drumming and dancing classes as well as babysitters for the Fri and Sat night shows.

There will be a great bazaar with Merchants from all over the country selling items from all over the world.

The teachers for Elevation 2009 are:
Elijah: World Burner Tribal Fusion
Rachel Brice: this year with 8 full hours of intermediate/advanced technique
Romka: Badd Ass Fusion Swordsters
Kassar: Slinky Sensual duo returns to share their newest creations
Ariellah: The Gothic Princess
Tribe Marrakech: more from your hostess Fusionistas
The Mezmer Society: Balkan Gypsy Vaudevillian with Tribal Fusion stylings, and music classes
Elizabeth Ostteen: Henna Body Art class, and Hair Design & Styling for the Stage
Chris Chambers: Kids Belly Dance
Donovan Warnick: Doumbek, Riq, and Kids Drumming class

Look for sign up info to drop mid December. Save your ducats! This is gonna be another awesome event!

So I love watching men dance. I LOVE it. Anyway, i was performing at a club here in jacksonville and i'm about halfway into a routine when i spot this guy kinda mimicking my moves. At first i thought he was making fun of me and then he started adding his own! So i pulled him up with me and we both started dancing together, him following my lead and then vice a versa. It was SO much fun and a complete shock. Apparently he'd been dancing for years here but theres not a huge market for dancers here so he never gets to really dance in public. We have a show together in a month and we've been dancing together for two weeks now. Its so much fun and refreshing t find not only another bellydancer here in jax outside of my old troupe but to find a male bellydancer as well!! Its beautiful!!!

Hey folks!!! As I'm sure you have read, on April 17-19 2009, Elijah Sound, is coming to the Elevation Bellydance Festival in Golden, CO to teach & perform. What you may not know is that I will be there as a guest performer in the Saturday night show & good ol' Lorenso from Unmata/Verbatim will be coming to play as well.

The 3 of us will be cohabitating for the weekend in the same hotel room, hanging out, working, & exchanging artistic energy. I spoke with the blokes & we would like to open up Q+A forum where other dancers can ask us questions about our dancing, lives, experiences working with each other, etc... Betweeen now & April I will be reviewing the questions & assorting them by which dancer(s) they are directed toward & we will post our answers on tribe after the festival.

So... ask away!!!

Elijah Sound (Soloist, 2013 Founder, Tribal Fire Cirque, Guest Performer of Atash Maya & Lucent Dossier)

Frank will not be touring with BDSS this Spring.

Well... I just got the reply. My biggest fear has just come true.

I just got the word from the BDSS office & they found a merchandise person who is based in LA & will be able to help prepare for the tour. I totally understand their decision, because they can start working with this person just as soon as they return from UK & also they will not have to pay for this person to fly out to LA or to provide them with a place to stay while they get the ball rolling on this tour.

I am a little embarrassed because I blasted how excited I was to be a part of this tour, & now I am not. I DEFINITELY counted my chickens before they hatched!!! As disappointed, as I am, I am not as crushed as I thought I would be. I began to prepare myself emotionally just in case the axe came down. SO glad I did, or my head would be in an oven right now.

At any rate... I am a little sad, but I'll get over it. This is just another element of show business. I am not the first person to have a similar situation with any company & I'm sure I won't be the last. It's nothing personal, it's just business.

Moving forward, I will still be teaching my classes in Colorado Springs, working on other dance projects, cross-training, & traveling to teach workshops & perform. I got a new camera & will be posting new videos & pictures of myself very soon. I will also be working on creating an online teaching program for next year.

Next year I will still be taking workshops with BDSS & going to see them perform whenever & where ever I can. My main goal is still to join BDSS (someday), but for right now, it is not my main focus. I hold no ill will toward BDSS & i wish them the best in their future projects & endeavors. They'll still have my full support & patronage. Plus me & the girls are my homies fa sho!!!

I want to thank you all for your support, friendship & sharing in my brief excitement, & I hope to still continue to share my art with you & give you things to enjoy.

-----Always,
-----Frank

...that's likely to revisit some themes that drive we male dancers nuts, if the website is any indication -- "Belly Dance: Celebrating the Sacred Feminine":

http://www.bellydancebook.net/

I always feel bad, when I have these kinds of discussions. On one hand, I feel strongly that it's wonderful, marvelous, and powerful that women have, and continue to have, empowering and transformative experiences in this dance form. I've seen women grow out of shells, shed painful memories and relationships, and become the kind of women I want to see in this world. It makes me glow that I've been honored to be a part of that.
At the same time, I'm frustrated to be on the sidelines when these kinds of bits pop up. I started when this kind of POV was "mainstream" in the dance, and where male prototypes were few on the ground. And in my semi-retirement, I've been happy to see male dancers thrive, and to even see a couple start to pop out "over there" in Professional circles! And that makes me not want to have to keep fighting for legitimacy for anyone to be able to do this dance. Or for myself to do so, as I slouch back into a more active dancer role.

*SIGH*

Guilty pleasures of dancing

Shira posted a rather fun topic on her board and I thought we'd enjoy it:

"What are your dance-related guilty pleasures? Do you have a collection of Bratz genie dolls? Maybe you made a pink costume for yourself just like the that Barbara Eden wore on "I Dream of Jeannie"? Do you like to curl up with a big box of Turkish delight and watch old Hollywood movies with a Middle Eastern theme such as "Solomon and Sheba" or "Samson and Delilah"? Something else?

So let's hear it - what are YOUR guilty-pleasure confessions related to the dance? "

My Original List:
I collect camels...all with one hump
I collect props...I am constantly looking for something new and fun to dance with.
I find myself constantly in thrift stores looking for that new pair of earrings or new pin to attach to a turban.
I have a small collection of fabrics that I keep buying in case mom has a chance to sew me up a new costume. (I really should just sit down and teach myself how to sew!
I check Tribe.net at least once a day whenever I can do it and I only do it on the computer with cookies that know what posts I have read.

My boyfriend has recently started to attend my belly dance classes, but is having problems finding mens belly dance costumes.

Whenever he has looked on the net, either pirates come up or what he calls poofy costumes?
Is there a smart line of belly dance clothes out there, that allows men to feel the part without feeling silly?

(This will be crossposted)

:(

I had an incident in one of my classes last week, and I've been stewing about it (because that is what I do. I don't let it go, I turn it inward and stew and it either comes out like vomit at the wrong time or it sits there like a big wad of swallowed bubble gum.)

I was teaching one of my classes which, natch, is all women. At the end of the class, I asked people to put their loaned tassle belts back into the bag I carry them in. One student took hers off, and as she was putting the belt in the bag said to me "You have a good night now, hear?" as she slapped my butt. And her hand was there just a bit too long for my comfort.

I was kinda shocked. The other students present registered some shock as well.

My reaction was to turn and say politely but loudly "if I were a male student with a female teacher, THAT kind of behaviour would NOT be tolerated. Please don't violate my personal space again!"

She flushed red with embarrassment and I immediately felt really bad. All of a sudden I thought I had maybe made a bigger issue out of nothing. It wasn't like she jumped me and ripped all my clothes off. But at the same time, she made me uncomfortable.

So...

This week I taught again. She was in class and smiling. We do a warm-up at the beginning of class where we lift our chest. I was counting it when I looked in the mirror and this same woman was grabbing her boobs and lifting them with her hands (as opposed to using her muscles to lift them).

My mouth fell open and I gasped loudly, but before I could say anything one of the other students called her on it.

"WHAT are you doing? You don't use your hands to lift them, you are supposed to be using your back muscles. THAT just looks rude!!"

Girlfriend flushed red again. "I just wanted to see if they would go any higher, because he can lift his chest really high. I didn't think anyone could see me."

Other student: "We're in a studio surrounded by mirrors and you're in front... we can ALL see you!"

This time Girlfriend apologized for disrupting the class and promised not to do so again. At the end of class, she came up to me and I sort of cringed because I was now afraid of what she was going to say.

"I just wanted to say, I really enjoy this class. It makes me feel great and I love this style."

All I did was smile, but I am worried that I should apologize for humiliating her in class.

Am I wrong here?

Valizan interviews Turkish Dancer Özgen on The Gilded Serpent

Gilded Serpent editrix Lynette Harris has uploaded video of me interviewing male Turkish dancer Özgen Ozgec at the International Bellydance Conference of Canada.

During his appearance on the Main Stage, Özgen danced with a rope that he twirled around his body while he was dancing. It was fascinating to watch, and he was damn good with it. I was backstage (I had just danced with The Righteous Rogues Of Raks) questioning him about the rope when Lynette happened along and asked to tape the conversation:

http://www.gildedserpent.com/newsgraphics/ComKaleidoscope.htm#ozgen

The irony of me saying "You're going back to Turkey... No one will know..." is ironic since this is now loaded onto the net! :)))

Take a gander at my troupe, Shades Of Araby dancing in Erie, Pennsylvania this past weekend. We did our choreographed Tribal Fusion number rather than our usual ATS stuff.

Hope it's ok to post this in the topic section, but several people were asking about Pauls vest in the picture.
I decided to put the rest of the stock on the website instead of holding it back for the shows.
All the styles and sizes I have left in stock are up now.
Just not all sizes are avaialable in every color.
This is something I do plan to carry all the time, I just haven't re-ordered in a while.

Hello all!

I have a beautiful soon-to-be, four year-old, God son, who loves to dance. You put on anything with a beat on and he's moving! And lately I've caught him imitating my hip movements and even giving me a little shoulder shimmy. I LOVE IT. Luckily, his pops is cool with all of this and have even allowed me to sew a little hip sash for him. I'd love to buy a bellydance video featuring one of our wonderful male dancers, but I haven't seen any around. Any suggestions out there?

I'm very sorry to have to announce the cancellation of this event.
I've just been informed that one of the presentors (the one who was to instruct the choreography portion of the workshop) has accepted a conflicting engagement.

I will be refunding the workshop fee to those of you that have paid already. Please contact me if you have already purchased your fire fans from Riz, and we will see what can be done there as well.
I was thinking to make a few more.
I'd like to know, would guys actually wear it?

Cool article on Men Dancing in Newsweek

Male Ballet dancer does a kick-ass article for Newsweek on male dancers -- the struggles we endure, and the stereotyping we face:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/120061

Obviously tuned to Ballet, but his opinions most certainly hit home for me. The money quote:

The most irritating aspect of the male-dancer stereotype is the underlying insinuation that we in some way lack strength of character or a courageous spirit. Male and female, all dancers undergo strenuous training from a very young age, and constantly wrestle with injuries and fatigue. But male dancers must possess a special type of will and fortitude if they are to become professionals, for, like fish swimming upstream, we have to fight through the current of thinly veiled contempt that much of society harbors for our chosen path. In our culture, girls are encouraged to take ballet; boys receive no such endorsement, except of course from ballet teachers or exceptionally supportive parents. The boy who perseveres in dance must have a genuine hunger for it, must be uniquely motivated and dedicated, and must develop a truly thick skin.

I love thinking about Pennsic..... and I wanted to make some turbans to keep my head and neck out of the sun. I normaly don't wear them and I wanted to know what is a good material to make them out of and how long they should be. There are some good fabric stores here but I have no idea what will work. Anyone...... anyone ..... Bueller......

men in class

I was talking with my boyfriend last night after he finished teaching. He was really irritated with a certain student who has just opened a cooking school (stay with me, it gets more relevant) who was excited that:

'Some men are going to be allowed into class. You know before, we never let men in class. Probably, they are more interested in women than cooking. What if they are stalkers?!! It's dangerous!"

...I'm sure you can follow where this is going. I looked and I couldn't find this topic addressed. I was wondering for you male teachers, do you allow men in your class? Do you interview them at all before class?

I used to teach at a school that had a 'taste of BD' workshop every month for free. Without fail, men would write every month that they wanted to come and watch. The director of the school would write that they would be welcome to come to a regular class and all of them never responded.

There is one male in our community now, he comes to lots of dance events, but he has been thrown out of every school in Tokyo because all he does is hit on girls during classes. I should add most studios have communal changing areas-if they have changing areas at all. The one man I have taken a class with changed with all of us in the same room-and at first a few girls did quit-but then everyone got with the program.

I'm just curious if you can weed these bad apples out ahead of time? Or how you would do so?

But at the same time I can't imagine turning away anyone from dance myself.

Large Men in Belly Dance

I just wanted to know what does the Male Belly Dancer community feel about heavy-set Belly Dancers. My name is Xavier, male belly dancer, and I have been studying belly dancing for three years now... I dance with a troup and with the studio wherei take classes on Tribal Fusion. I am not that much of an amature but I am a little above average for your typical male dancer. i am now perfroming , have been for about a year now. Many people have loved me and many have had no intrest, but my question is does it seem unattractive to be a large belly dancer. I kind of have a little conflict within myself about it all, but bellydance is something that i love and hold true to my heart. I myself do think I am a decent dancer, especially for someone my size (240lb). But i do look great at least and I try real hard.. But maybe i can't live up to other dancers I have seen and met including Rachel Brice and Zoe Jakes . At least i can try, or should i even bother? I don't know. If you would like to see the clips on YouTube search for Torque Bellydance and tell me what you guys think. Xavier Shadowdancer

Obstacles to men in dance?

I am currently writing an article on attitudes and obstacles men face in Belly dance and I am looking for some input.

I am familiar with some of the common myths & attitudes circulating (belly dance was only danced by women, originates in birthing rituals, expresses the goddess, men are too aggressive and warlike to do this 'feminine' dance form, male dancers are inherently effeminate, women can not learn from male teachers because they lack the feminine essence of dance, etc.)

But I would like to know from you all who know better than I- what are some of the obstacles you face in becoming a Belly Dancer as a male, what are the attitudes you face from the dance community and from the public, the current atmosphere if you will.
I am looking for the good as well as the bad, so feel free to share positive experiences too, and let me know what keeps you going when you do get those bad attitudes thrown in your face.

you can pm me or email me direct at alaskadancer@alaska.net

If you want to see the inspiration for the article, Lynette has asked me to expand on a letter I wrote in response to another article on the Gilded Serpent. I have been thinking about this for years, but this has prompted me to actually start writing:
http://www.gildedserpent.com/let2ed.htm (letter)

Pretty cool story actually, with Tito Seif making a comment, though he is NOT the featured dancer. Reporter did his homework this time too, and mentions the history of men being involved. A bit awkwardly written at points, but a good story! Yay us!

Meryem Vani's showcase on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 is still looking for a few dancers. The show takes place at the Tsunami Cafe at 4019 Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake, Los Angeles. Starts at (approximately) 7pm and ends at (approximately) 9pm. Please bring your own CD or cued-up audio cassette tape. Between five and seven minutes is ideal. No swords or fire. Snakes are okay. If you're interested, please contact Meryem Vani at (323) 819-1948. All levels of experience more than welcome. The space itself is a a downstairs theatre that "feels" rather like off off broadway. Thanks in advance!

I am thinking of subscribing to a magazine for bellydance, but I don't want one that never addresses the existence of male dancers. I don't demand that every article uses "(s)he" and "him or her" etc. but one that occasionally publishes articles written by/for men.

shira has a list of a coule magazines on her site.
http://www.shira.net/no-local.htm#Magazines

anyone ever read any of these and like them?

more importantly, anyone ever been published in them?

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that my troupe is hosting their first workshop coming up March 8! I doubt anyone on this list is near enough to want to come out, but if you can spread the word!? The workshop is called Shimmy, Shimmy Workshop with Mahsati Janan and since I just recently got the 3/4 shimmy, I'm definately looking forward to it! Visit our webpage at http://www.risingsuntribe.com for more details!

OK, so in my quest to have more props than I have time to perform with, I went to a speciality store and looked at shishas. the one I liked was green glass with silver metals. what concerns me is the fact that the base was flat and had about a 4 inch diameter. watching the video of Tarik I am pretty sure his headwear supports the shisha so this is not a problem. Anyone have any knowledge in this area?

Dancer Name?

Hello,

I have been taking lessons for about 6 months now and am going to be doing my first public performance in about a month, the question I have is whether or not I should take on dancer/performance name?

Many of the dancers I have seen so far do have dancer names but then you have others who don't, I suppose it is a personal choice but I would appreciate any opinions.

Also, is there any convention for what names are appropriate?

I have been considering the name Sirhan which means wolf in Muslim, when I did a google it hit on Sirhan Sirhan who assassinated Sen. Robert Kennedy. Before I had googled it I liked the name and still do somewhat but have concern about how my fellow Americans might take it.

Ok, so any thoughts opinions would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Eric (at least for now)

Come to Toronto for the IBCC, as there will be a load of men represented this year on the stages.

Tito is our headliner, Nath Keo will be teaching, Amir from Mayyadah & Amir (not Amir Thaleb) will be there too. There will also apparently be a panel discussion on Men's Bellydance which I will supposedly be a panellist on. I've heard a rumour that DaVid is coming too, but that I don't know for sure.

This event was unbelievable last year. I found it like a recharge of my bellydance battery to be surrounded by people who were as passionate - if not more so - about bellydance as me. There was never a dull moment. And this line-up has something for everyone, whether you like Tribal (Amy from Unmata!), Egyptian Cabaret (Tito and Aida Nour!), American Cabaret (Bozenka!!) or Turkish (Ferda was here last year and blew people away with her Turkish dance on the Main Stage.):

An etiquette question about video

(X-posted from Shades Of Araby Tribe)

Here is a thought I was pondering and would love to get some input back.

Let us say you are a dance troupe/performer of some sort. However, you are not so huge that you command a fee when you get invited to dance at gigs. You dance and the host videotapes the show.

Is it good form on the part of the host to offer a copy of the performance tape free since they aren't paying the performers to come dance? Or more to the point, is it tacky or in bad form to charge anything other than the price of a DVD disc to get a copy?

My thought was that if I pay my gas to get to your gig, put on make-up, and then perform for no pay, and you are charging people to come in to your show, the least you could do is give me a free DVD of the performance. Giving me an order form to order a copy at $20 seems wrong somehow.

Or am I wrong?

Searching for pictures of male dancers

Hi ya'all, I know you have seen me post before about NTMEDA www.ntmeda.org and our magazine Papyrus.
Well, I am searching for pictures of male dancers to put in our new edition on Men in Bellydance. I have 3 great articles (by male dancers) so far and I need pics to go with them. Of course the author is supplying pics of their own, but I would like to include other great performance or studio shots.

Please send your contribution to s_kayton@yahoo.com - pics should be at least 300 dpi.

The magazine reaches over 300 dancers in the North Texas area and beyond (Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, etc).
I would be able to send copies of the edition to any dancer whose pics are used in the edition.

My deadline is Friday.

Also - if anyone is insterested in writing for us in the furture please contact me. I am always looking for new articles related to all areas of the dance we all love. My theme for the next issue is workshops - how to choose, how to prepare, what to expect, how to get the most out the workshop...etc. I aslo include articles not related to the theme but timely in the dance community.

Thank you gentlemen!

After our recent show at Tribal:PURA in Milwaukee, we were inspired to put up a tribe of our own. Since it seems all the cool kids have their own tribes, we didn't want to be left out. :)

Headgear?

Hey guys. I'm slowly piecing my costume together - pants, front/back panels, chainmail hip-belt, close-fitting T-shirt-ish thing - but I'm stalling on top. Tribal's my game, so I'm trying to complement the ladies while avoiding the head equivalent of a choli. Any help here?

Sofia, Maral and I finally have an online presence as Shades Of Araby now have a website!

http://shadesofaraby.valizan.com/

I have been crazy busy so troupemate Maral whipped up this beautiful site. Hopefully, the main site with my own stuff will soon follow.
